Slovak Women in Space

The Permanent Mission of the Slovak Republic to the United Nations in cooperation with Slovak-American Cultural Center and Zivena USA Chapter proudly present the recorded video of the live event, Slovak Women in Space featuring a conversation between Dr. Michaela Musilova and Vanessa O'Brien. On Friday, October 28, 2022 the Slovak American community in NYC had the unique opportunity to meet two remarkable Slovak women who are connected through their love of space and Slovakia. These accomplished scientists and explorers shared their life journey, described pivotal moments leading them to climb summits, explore Mars and fly to space. Their riveting evening discussion undoubtedly inspired us to reach for the stars and pursue our dreams! The discussion with Dr. Michaela Musilova, astrobiologist and author and Vanessa O'Brien, business executive, author and explorer was part of an event hosted at the residence and auspicious of the Permanent Representative of the Slovak Republic to the United Nations, H.E. Ambassador Michal Mlynar and Dr. Andrea Mlynarova. As part of the event the Permanent Representative as well as the Slovak-American Cultural Center each had the honor to be presented with a Slovak flag that has been to space during Vanessa O'Brien's sub-orbital space flight. Vanessa completed the historic feat in August as she became the first woman to complete the Explorers’ Extreme Trifecta – reaching extremes on land, sea, and air after she passed the Kármán line as part of Blue Origin NS-22 spaceflight. Nigel Goodman, Astronomical Society of Edinburgh, UK

"Michaela is a fascinating and engaging speaker, with a wealth of experience to draw upon. Her recent online presentation to the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh was excellent, and while we were organizing the talk she was both highly professional  and approachable. We would highly recommend her as a speaker."

Sabina Sabados, President of the Slovak-American Cultural Center, USA

“I recently participated in one of Dr Michaela Musilova's discussions entitled "Slovak Women in Space". The panel discussion was invigorating, inspirational and genuine. Her dynamic presentation style gives the audience the feeling that you are part of her journey. The audience consisted on a wide range of age groups including youth and I truly felt that the two hour talk touched every single person in the room. Her personal journey is one that resonated with the audience because she openly shared her struggles, her challenges and the barrier she faced! She is tuned to her audience and is able to convey complex messages in an easy to understand manner! I am inspired not only by the incredible feats she has already achieved in her career, but also by the dreams of future adventures! I walked away from the presentation with enthusiasm, a better understanding of astrobiology and a feeling of optimism!”

Benjamin Sorensen, Cape Fear Community College, USA

“Dr. Musilova found a way to mix the esoterics of astrobiology with the most elementary of information in her presentation to the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh, making it absolutely appropriate for experts in her field and elementary school children at once. She also did so while being very personable, down-to-earth, and brilliantly funny at times as well. I would recommend her to present to any audience, any age, and at any time. She is absolutely brilliant and yet absolutely friendly in her presence. She makes each listener feel as though she is speaking to them individually, no matter the size of the audience or the platform.”
